Fashion Viral - Behind The Scenes.

Here are a few behind the scene shots I took of a fashion viral directed by my sister Charlotte Hadden and filmed by Justin Brown with model Luke Worrall.

The piece is loosely based around the story of a young man going through the struggles of his lost love. Trapped inside his own prison he battles with his emotions visually represented by the elements- lingering smoke, ash falling, water, turbulent winds, flashing lights. Moments of calm thoughts turn into frustration and flashbacks of his lost love.
A second shoot of a girl will also be incorporated.

I helped out with some of the set design and gained general experience of the shoot.

University has come to an end, and as one door closes another opens.
I received a BA Hons First Class degree for Illustration and have started two creative internships for fashion companies based in London.

I have been working just off Brick Lane in East London for FashAddict, an online based womenswear brand and B-side By Wale, a menswear brand, for the past month.
I have mainly been photographing clothing and merchandising for the website, as well as working on identities and design work for the brands.

I have also recently started working for DreamandAwake, a brand that recycle vintage dresses from around the World and transform them into new designs.
This internship is much more creative, I will be working on packaging, promotion, film, print and exhibition design.

Printed Mock Up Portfolio + EEE Hand In

Packaging for my hand in, continuing the theme of my branding through presentation.

My printed out EEE essay with eyelet binding, A4 double-sided print.

I presented my essay in a book form to represent my way of working with layouts and printed matter.

Translucent front cover printed on velum.

To get an idea of how I would like to present my final portfolio I have printed up a mock up on A3 off white cartridge paper, with a textured, translucent velum cover, bound with a book ring.

The concept behind my idea was to create a simple, clean and changeable portfolio that would allow me to easily add or remove images to be updated or adjusted for clients.

I really like the overall look of this portfolio, but feel it needs a more striking and sturdy outer cover, as well as being printed in top quality with top quality paper.

Here are some 'screen grabs' of my PDF portfolio. The design is very simple, with clean lines and plenty of negative space. I have just included a project title and will include my CV and personal details in a separate booklet when I print it out and bind it. I may also make a few small changes to the layout before I print it out.

I have only included the work I feel best represents me and what I want to do and have kept it to around 10 - 12 pieces/projects, as the research I previously did told me this was the expected amount. I started with my strongest project and ended with my second strongest project, showing a flow from beginning to end.

Self Promotion - Pull Out Poster

The original design and double-sided printed, pull out, folded poster up on the wall, the paper is ever so think so as you can see the prints bleed onto the opposing page, however this is an effect I really like, it adds depth and texture to the overall layout.
To add that extra unique touch I curved off the edges to make it stand out from an ordinary paper format.

Self Promotion

I have been busy creating a few self promotional print outs to send to possible clients, using some of my spare posters prints, with a few new layouts.

The key for self promotion as an illustrator is to keep it unique yet simple, and creative yet fairly cheap.

Instead of printing off a load more spreads for a booklet, I instead folded up a few of my prints left over from my exhibition and combined them with a few new layouts in a limited edition style book. I bound the folded pages together with coiled coloured wire and made an insert for my business card to add a handmade touch. The pages can be pulled out and put up as posters or flicked through as a book.

The one bit of advice I was given about self promotion is to create artwork the clients can put up on their wall, as Art Directors like tangible and accessible art.

A3 double-sided, pull out folded poster. Printed on Bible Paper so is extra thin and great for folding, could be printed up to A1 for a greater effect. This piece works as a small booklet or as a poster, and can be given out exhibitions or sent to possible employers.

Book 2 used the same technique as book 1, using old posters and new layouts, however with this book I attached a business card on the front cover with an eyelet, again for a unique, handmade feel. I always admire the small touches on items such as these, so feel that it is very important to focus on every little finishing touch.

CV Design & Update

I updated my CV with a few new details as well as taking out any irrelevant ones, and updated the whole look with my new logo and typeface used as part of my self branding into a new layout. I kept it simple ans straight to the point.

Boscombe BeachPod Exhibition

Preparation for the exhibition began on Thursday 22nd, where we printed large format images before mounting them on freshly painted boards. We decided to attach our artwork with simple tack pins at both ends, then secured the pieces with double sided Velcro for a flat, smooth finish.
As we were each designated 4 sides of the boards each we were able to display a range of different sized pieces. I went for 2 A1 prints, with a selection of smaller prints grouped together.

The day of exhibition kicked off with a meeting and greeting from Wayne Hemmingway as well as an official 'opening', and later a talk from Wayne about his Beach Pod design experience.
Below are photographs of the exhibition space, which was a neat little room equipped with a kitchenette and large balcony - where we spent most of the day, as well as our day time entertainment from the festival that was happening on the beach.

The aim of this event was to combine culture with the newly designed Boscombe Beach Front, and to help push sales of the beach pods themselves. As you can see the pictures aren't that great, as these pods definitely weren't designed for an exhibition space, so it was more of a 'quick look and move on', than 'stand and admire' sort of event.
However I managed to sell a couple of prints and found the overall experience of setting up my own personal exhibition really insightful, I feel that I have gained more confidence and knowlegde with how to set up my future exhibitions, including the things that take up your time i.e, mounting and cutting etc.

Illustration + Photography Fundraising Auction

This auction was held in collaboration with the photography in order to raise money for our Free Range exhibition in London. Our day started early in the morning with designing the layout of the exhibition, painting the boards, labeling the work, and generally curating the exhibition.

The exhibition attracted a lot of interest and we managed to create an interesting, friendly environment. What I found interesting was working with the photography students and seeing their work. We consciously combined illustration with photography to unify both arts as one, creating a great visual display.
This was also a good opportunity to create a creative community within our own course and we got some good ideas concerning our Bournemouth show and The Free Range.

Boscombe BeachPod Exhibition Promotion

Nick Franklin and myself will be exhibiting our work in one of Boscombe's Beach Pods designed by Wayne Hemminway on Sat 24th April on Boscombe beach front in Bournemouth.

The space is fairly compact with 4x 1mx2m boards each to exhibit our work.

Below is our page in the promotional flyer sent out around Bournemouth, Boscombe and the press.

The exhibition will be showcasing a range of work from Visual Communication, National Diploma, Photography as well as professional artists. The aim of the exhibition is to sell the Beach Pods as well as art, combing both in this event.

With preparation for our auction at University, as well as finalising our EMP we haven't had much time to prepare for this exhibition so I plan to present a few pieces from my final major project. I will be exhibiting the projects "Natures Unnatural' and 'People and Plants', in a salon style without framing. Nick and I plan to present our work and promotion in the same way as we will be working side by side in the same space.

I have decided to use some of my other work to use in my promotion to show a range of work. Below is the artwork I will be using on my business cards as well as some postcards and posters, which will be sold at the exhibition.

Using light shone through reflective objects to reveal their hidden presence, illustrating the saying 'Light is that which reveals + Dark is that which hides.'
I enhance this concept further by printing these abstract images onto acetate then shining light through them to project the images further.

The final images were frame din glass mounts. They will be displayed and presented so that you can only see the full effect of the image with the light shining directly through them.

I added a few lines of text and displayed my photo scans in a 'calender' pin up style. I haven't worked on the photographs at all yet, however I plan to keep the designs very simple and clean, as I really like their current look, which has no design intentions, just like a diary or calender, they look as if they have just been gathered together with no thought.
I would also like to add more notes and text to create a more personal appearance, and will consider binding the images together.

By treating my sketchbook as a blank canvas for a book design, I can see what layouts work, and make use of the white space surrounding the images. A new topic documenting my everyday life over two days.
I have used disposable cameras to represent immediacy as well as a mundane and vernacular photography style, representing a kind of old fashion style of everyday photographs taken without any ‘artistic thought’, just to document a moment, a memory.
I would like to experiment further with disposable vs digital to show a division between past, being a grainy film effect and present, fine digital look.
My aim is to display these images in a 'calender' style to represent past, present and day-to-day occurrences.

With this piece I am aiming to use the photographs I took combined with my artwork, which represents fragmented and abstracted elements of nature, focusing on contrast in texture, light and shape.
I have taken my photographs, which I took in various natural environments and fragmented them to their purest geometric, graphical form, transforming a piece of nature into something very unnatural.
My plan is to then take these images back into their environment and rephotograph them, allowing part of the original, natural environment be a part of the image, showing further contrast between the unnatural abstract artwork and nature.

This shoot illustrates contrast through reflection. By reflecting elements such as the blue, cloudy, natural, bright sky against the rough, dull, man-made concrete, and the man-made mirrored card against natural foliage etc.
I experimented holding the mirrored card as well as placing in the natural and artificial environments/textures.
I edited a few of the images by playing around with compositions to magnify the contrast through content and layout.

EMP: RESISTANCE/D&AD FINALS

I sent my final designs boards to D&AD this week with this description -
The word ‘Resistance’ initially says to me blocking off, putting up a barrier, fighting against and refusal.
Having just completed my Final Major Project on the ‘Subconscious Mind’ I researched into ways we think and our automatic behaviours.
This lead me to the act of resisting thoughts, in particular how the conscious mind resists thoughts that the subconscious mind cannot.
I started this project with an experimental photo-shoot illustrating ‘Resistance’. The aim was to demonstrate the idea of blocking out/resisting/containing/refusing thoughts, behaviours and emotions.
Using a mirror as a prop, combined with disruptive movement I wanted to enhance this idea by reflecting and bouncing back thoughts.

The images include a variety of geometric shapes and go further to represent the idea of containing and blocking off thoughts in the simplest of forms.

EMP: SKETCHBOOK+TUTORIAL

A few photos of my sketchbook development, experimenting with contrasting textual collages and some of my photography, illustrating opposites.
To get some feedback on my development I had a tutorial with Robbino Salvatore who gave me positive feedback and suggested that I concentrate on shooting the same locations at different times of the day to show a more obvious contrast, meaning that I would be mainly focusing on contrast in nature.
I felt more positive after my tutorial, however the feedback only focused on one part of my project and I am still unclear as to what I will be focusing on.
Ideally I would like to have a clear and strong conceptual theme that I can work to in order to create my final pieces, yet I don't feel I do at this time, so this week I will be looking at the work I have done and brainstorming ideas to have this clear by the end of the week.

SO.FASHION: NEW PROPOSAL

Having been working on this brief for a few weeks now using the theme of 'Old & New' to illustrate the vintage and new designers that will be sold at this event, Rhiannon, from arts events who briefed me liked my idea she has decided to change the event to now be based on 'Old Vs New', asking the audience 'Which one are you?"
The old being the vintage collection, and the new being the t-shirt, hoodie and casual clothes that everyone wears now.
Rhiannon has now briefed me to create flyer artwork that shows a division between old and new, however I suggested combing the two in one image.
In these photos I experimented by projecting fragmented photographs that I took in a vintage shop, being the old, onto a white t-shirt, being the new. With the use of reflection I am again creating a contrast between old and new and hope to play on this point even further through a lot of editing!
These images need A LOT of working on, I hope to add collage, text and graphics to illustrate the event.

MARKET ESTATE PROJECT

Market Estate Project exhibits 75 artists work in 20 vacant flats in a soon to be demolished 1960's housing estate in North London.
The estate was opened up to a wide variety of artists ranging from graffiti to moving image, and were asked to create and exhibit their work based on the people and history of the estate, before it is bulldozed down.
Many artists used the materials, buildings, decor and personal accounts from previous residents to illustrate a fun, personalized, political or pure abstract point.
I especially liked the rooms that included projection, sound and installation, and how the art was placed in every space of the estate, including in rooms, outside, in cupboards, corridors and staircases.

V&A: IRON WORKS

A part of the V&A that I haven't really paid much attention too previously is the Iron Works section, however since basing my project on contrasting elements with the use of shape, form and light and shadow, I found these works so inspiring. I especially liked how pieces ranged from intricate to very simple designs and the shadows they casted on the walls.

V&A: DIGITAL PIONEERS

This display provides an overview of the first decades of the computer's history in art and design. Exhibiting plotter drawings, screenprints, digital inkjet prints, photographs and animations. (V&A)
I felt truly inspired by this exhibition, the pieces that were created between 1960 and 1980 felt so relevant to today's trends in design, and like myself focused on abstraction, shape and form.

EMP: RESISTANCE SHOOT

An experimental photoshoot illustrating 'Resistance'. The aim was to demonstrate the idea of blocking out/resisting/containing/refusing thoughts, behaviours and emotions.
Using props such as a mirror and bubble wrap and lots of disruptive movement enhance this idea by reflecting and bouncing back thoughts and protecting the mind.
The images that include a diamond shape go further to represent the idea of containing and blocking off thoughts in the simpliest of forms.

My initial ideas and images are still in their first stages so will need a lot more working on. However I am liking this concept and the images that support it, so will work further on similar photoshoots, experimenting with different lighting, environments, poses and actions to display more emotion and meaning.

EMP:ENVIRONMENTAL COLLAGE

I decided to get a bit hands on with some extra large collage using contrasting photographs and coloured paper. The photographs are mainly of textures and natural elements such as night, day, light, dark, rock, water, beach, woods etc.
I think that it would be interesting to place this collage back in one of these environments and photograph it, to show the contrast between the original image seen in the newly fragmented collage.

BEETROOT MOULD

EMP:DEVELOPMENT

By laying out my most recent designs I can see how they work together and pick out which areas I need to work on and which ideas to develop further.
I created these simple collages using the photographs I have taken over the last couple of weeks, by combining contrasting textures, shapes and elements I am trying to create images that can then be combined in an overall layout, seen in image 2.

My plan is to combine these collages with photographs, typography and 3D/installation pieces using contrasting processes such as light + dark, 2D + 3D, and black/white + colour etc.
I hope to really work on my concept and how my final piece will be demonstrated over the next week or so, as I feel my message is not entirely clear.
I also hope to to a lot more photoshoots using people and human interaction to result in a fashion magazine/culture being my target audience.

SO.FASHION

I have been asked to design the promo for So.Fashion organised by the fashion events lot at uni. The event takes place at Bar.So in May and will showcase new designers as well as second hand, vintage and 'jumble sale' goods. The brief is very open and they just want me to create something eye-catching and unique.

As a starting point, I thought about the idea of 'old & new', as the event will be selling old/vintage goods as well as new designs, and will be sort of a jumble sale.
Using my installation style I first photographed inside the vintage Clobber in Boscombe, equipped with mirrored and white cut out diamond shapes card to hold up in the shop, this would then become the event info and the contrasting factor between the old clothes in the shop and the new.
I then used elements of collage to represent that old fashioned patchwork feel and jumble sale impression.

EMP:SHADOW FORM

V&A: DECODE

This interactive media exhibition is currently on at the V&A and is showcasing some of the most advanced high-tech design ranging from Flash media to video.
I felt especially inspired by the lighting and environment, and how a lot of the installations relied on the shadows of the people in the space to work.
The exhibition included all of the aspects of design I am currently working in, including moving image, reflection, projection, light and shadow, and relied on human interactivity to work. A few of the pieces also reminded me of my 'Hypngogia' installation, with the use of projection, geometric moving forms and human interaction.
Unfortunately the technology was pretty temperamental and not all of the devices were working, however the ones that that were really did get me thinking 'how the hell did they do that?'...

EMP: CONTRASTING COLLAGE

A few basic digital and hand-rendered collages using some of the photographs I previously took. These images illustrate the contrast of colours, textures and light found in nature, using elements of type and reflection to push these ideas further. At this current stage these initial collages are still very basic and my intention is to focus much more on my installation, photographic creations, 'physical illustrations' and experiments.
My current thoughts are to create my final piece as a large set of images placed together representing a linking contrast between each image, and to make sure I don't get to distracted by creating 'pretty pictures' and focus on constructing original pieces of interactive, photographic and existing works.

EMP:LIGHT + DARK

After a brief tutorial with Joel I have decided to dedicate each week to a different theme of antonyms/opposites to experiment as much as possible, and see which areas stand out the most in order for me to push and develop. So continuing from my experimentation with nature and day + night I have dedicated this week to light + dark.

I headed straight to the beach to capture what seems to be the only day of sun we've had in a long time. I wanted capture natural light and reflection, then contrast that with artificial lighting and shadows.
Artificial lighting using paper cut outs, and faceted glass to create abstract forms of reflection.

I previously gathered some quotes relating to antonyms of light and dark, this quote really stood out to me and also relates to the antonym of hide + seek/reveal + conceal.
To illustrate 'Light is that which reveals and dark is that which hides', I punched the type into paper and can only be visibly read with the aid of light, either shone through to reveal lit up type in the shadow or held up against light to illuminate the type.

EMP:COLLABORATION

I am collaborating with Nick Franklin, working on the theme of visual perception, what is real? what is reflection?
Nick and I decided to collaborate on a project representing distorted perception as I am working on antonyms and opposites and Nick is working on visual perception and 'Alice in Wonderland' Syndrome, where people view body parts and objects larger or smaller than they actually are.
The aim is to create an interactive installation where objects and people are placed in, by using mirrors we want to create a distortion on reality. Here we experimented with mirrors and 3D objects to find ways in which we can distort, enlarge and augment physical objects.

Experimenting with light, dark, projection, reflection and shadows in a photoshoot.
I projected several photographs and images of my own (below), onto a model, I wanted to capture all of the elements above with movement and repetition.
The results are very abstract, I would like to develop these ideas further, as the aim of this shoot was to target what works and what ideas could be pushed.
I kept the concept and theme to this experiment very open to see what visual elements I could focus on further.
With the photographs I used in the projection shoot I wanted to show contrast between colour, texture and forms. Matching natural features with artificial/man made features, for example the ripples of the sea against broken glass.

A few shots of my installation for 'play' with pink lighting and projection. With this shoot I really wanted to represent night time and going out, so by playing with elements of shadow and reflection I tried to create that nighttime atmosphere.

With this shoot I wanted to create a more ordered day time look, so used blue lighting to create interesting shadows, yet still show a contrast between the shadows I created in the 'play' shot.
I also got in a few shots to try out human interaction, which is something I would like to get more of into my work.

EMP:INSTALLATION+LIGHTING TESTING

Before getting into the studio I tested out the set up and lighting of my installations using a rail and wire to hang and arrange the objects, before using simple spotlighting, coloured gels and a projector.
the tricky part is getting the (low res, basic) projector and lighting to work in sync to allow enough light to photograph the objects, however I feel that the dark lighting suits the 'play' theme well, representing night time and going out, whereas the 'work' set up will be much more lighter and purer, with minimal or no projection.

EMP:TYPE+PROJECTION

I have been developing the idea of creating shadows and reflection through the type for my installation. Here I projected previous images that I created using a handmade kaleidoscope and my own illustrations onto the circular mirrored card, which has the type cut out.
I am fascinated with the way I can create a number of different images from one object and light source. With the use of reflection and shadow I am creating 3 different images.
This would work great in my overall installation along with other objects and in a studio.

EMP:IDEAS + TUTORIAL

For EMP I would like to complete a series of (smaller) briefs, allowing myself to create a much broader range of portfolio material.

Although I did enjoy NP and my topic choice, I felt that I created a large body of work only on one topic, whereas I could have created the equivalent amount of work on a number of topics, therefore adding to my portfolio range.

Having started on the live brief Work + Play, I would like to continue with the idea of creating illustrations that use physical objects and are much more hands on, with added elements of light, shadow, projection etc.

Other live briefs I would like to work on are the YCN student live brief for Ted Baker Autumn/Winter window display, where I plan to create a multi-media installation again using elements of projection and lighting to develop an eye-catching display. This brief is very open so allows me to truly experiment with anything I feel is relevant.

Also to continue working on the D&AD Resistance brief for Don't Panic, which I was previously working on in NP. I would like to use reflection and photography to illustrate how the conscious mind resists thoughts that the subconscious mind cannot.

Other small authorial briefs I have been toying with include one day projects where I gather and document everything that has happened to me, places I have been, things I have seen, heard etc, in a day. This will push me to work to a tight deadline and to push my ability to be as creative as possible in a short space of time. The outcome could be designed to suit the results of my day.

Déjà vu, is a project that explores past images being brought to the present day with 3D elements. Everyone knows the feeling of déjà vu, I would like to explore ways in which I can put that feeling into an image using aspects of 3D, 2D, installation and photography.

After discussing a few of my ideas in tutorial yesterday, Paul suggested that I use 'Work + Play' as a running theme throughout this brief. I didn't think of doing this and like the idea of having an overall theme, however at this stage I am unsure that this may result in producing a large body of work on the same topic again, unless I can really differentiate smaller projects within this theme?...

With the theme of 'Work + Play' I should look at the latest trend of combining the both, many shops now hold club nights and parties, changing a work space into a party place.

The group also suggested that I experiment with different locations to set up installations, and to consider hiring out places, rooms, shop etc. To be really creative with my installations and artwork I need to consider where I locate and shoot it really carefully.

I found a short and simple submission brief on the YCN website and thought it would be a great starting point for my EMP.

Lucy Brown Studio is doing a little bit of work / play on the idea of what the two words mean to different people. Please send us two images, one which represents 'work' to you and the other representing 'play'.

My plan is to set up 'mini' installations using clothes and objects from my everyday life that represent these words to me.
Work = daytime, my mac, creative objects, casual clothes, quirky objects that inspire me...
Play = Partying, nightlife, going out, sparkly clothes, heels...

I want to show a contrast and a similarity in both images, as I have fun doing both.
In this first installation I photographed my clothes and objects from a floor plan perspective and in an environment. I edited the final two images a fair bit to make them acceptable, as I really need to do this in a studio with better lighting.
I would like to experiment more with light and shadow, and the idea of hanging the items up to play with these elements in a studio.

I have been re-working one of my illustrations for a simple front cover for my final book.
The title is simple yet descriptive and I will also be giving a short title description one the first page to compliment the front cover.

FEEDBACK AND FINAL PIECE IDEAS

After presenting my ideas in tutorial and getting great feedback and advise to edit the final film and package it along with my artwork and photographs as a product, I thought it could work well.My original plan was to produce a simple two colour zine to accompany my installation, however as I now need to package my final piece as a product with a CD insert, posters etc, I wanted to create a much more experimental book. However I will be suing images from this layout as I feel they work well.
This zine is in full colour and on standard paper, which isn’t suitable and would need to be heavier. After trying out busier layouts, I felt I needed to simplify it by using more full page images and plenty of blank pages. I will be using a book like this with extra flaps, booklets and posters attached, so that the user can interact with the book more.
I still need to work on the layout and what images to use as I have a mixture of media, ranging from kaleidoscopic photos to installation photos.
With this design I combined a double sided printed zine with a separate pull out poster. The user can flick through the book and poster, then remove the poster to reveal a full size illustration. The poster has a cut out replicating my installation. The book will be printed out the same in each copy, however the poster will vary.
This is still a very rough mock up, the layout needs a lot more working on, however I feel that this will be the design and format for my final piece.

This is how the posters look when put up. I have repeated the theme of suing cut outs, so that the posters can be layered up and even replicate the installation I set up by shining light through the cut outs. The posters will be printed on simple newsprint paper and show a range of my illustrations and photographs to compliment the book that they/it comes in.

LIVE INSTALLATION

As I have already tried out the installation previously in a miniature version, I was aware of all the things that needed to be done, just in a larger scale.
Before setting up the installation I pre-cut custom size paper, roughly larger than A1 before adding extra support and weight to the top and bottom of the paper.
I then cut out geometric shapes, which I drew and cut out of A4 pieces to see how they would work with one another.

I set up the studio with a white backdrop, and tested out the projectors before hanging the pieces of paper using mono filament and hooks, about a foot apart.
Luckily I had a few people to help with this part of the set up, as it took quote a bit of work to get the paper leveled up.

The idea behind the layers, is to represent how the mind filters out each memory, gradually becoming fewer memories and less clear.
It also represents the ‘layers of the mind’, subconscious being the ‘underlying layer’.

During and after the installation I felt really proud with what I had achieved and felt I had come on a long way, trying something new and ambitious. Luckily I had all the equipment and people to help me with the installation so it did go all to plan.

INSTALLATION PLAN

After experimenting with a few projection ideas, using light, kaleidoscopes and my illustrations, I have decided that it is definitely something I am working towards as a final piece.
The plan is to set up an installation within an ‘exhibition’ style space, which could locate people as well as my art projections. By creating an exhibition style installations and introducing people to the space, I am instantly making my illustrations interactive.
The space will contain at least one projector, depending on how many I can get hold of, with hanging large format paper with geometric cut outs.
By hanging the layered pieces of paper I want to introduce the act of movement, as they swing wen people move in and around them.

By walking through and past the paper pieces, people will experience a subtle effect similar to the ‘dreamachine’, where you will visualize flickers of geometric formed light.

To capture this experience within the space I will be taking a series of photographic stills, and a filmed moving image, which will represent how the people interact with the artwork.
The filming will be completed with the help of a recently graduated cinematographer to ensure it looks as professional as possible.
There are possibilities to add sound and stills to the moving image to develop this piece further.

After my last experimentation with projecting, I have pushed the the process further by projecting through various cut out layers of paper resulting in four different images.
Although this experimentation is a very rough mock up, i.e. masking tape, bulldog clips and a coat hanger, I think if professionally done, would work great in an exhibition space, where various images can be projected.

So I have been thinking of ways to produce moving image, when I came up with this idea (which
definitely isn't moving image!) However I feel it works, not only does it give that dreamy, slightly blurry, hazy feel that we get when we dream, but by cutting out geometric shapes and projecting the images onto and through the plain paper, I am imitating the visuals of the Dreamachine, but without the movement.

I think this process would work great in a room full of these types of pieces, projecting different images. It would allow the viewer to walk around the images, inbetween the layers and through the projections.

The technique is simple but the results work, I especially like how 2 different images are created, and feel that this technique is worth developing with more layers and cut outs.

We were lucky enough to have 2 guest lecturers and professional illustrators Salvatore Rubbino and Marcus Oakley in this week, who both gave interesting, insightful talks about their personal experiences.
Children's book illustrator Salvatore Rubbino gave an in-depth talk focusing on his work process and the process he goes through to create his illustrations. He gave advice on getting yourself out there and contacting publishers you wish to work for, as well as the pros and cons of having an agent. Although his work isn't at all in my style or an area I wish to work in, I found it interesting to see his way of working and how he got to where he is.
Looking through his sketchbooks and final published books I could really see why people would like to use his work, he has a very distinctive style, and isn't scared to make mistakes or draw things in a way that isn't traditionally 'right'.

Marcus Oakley, another illustrator with a very distinct style gave an in-depth talk about his journey from a young age to where he is in this present day. His talk was based on all of the things in his life that had affected and inspired his way of working, starting from the house he was brought up in, to the jobs he has worked on during his 10years as a working illustrator.
I found it interesting that he worked in the fashion industry as a print maker for Paul Smith for 3 years, before working as a freelance illustrator. Fashion is always an area I have wished to work in, so I feel a job like this would suit me perfectly as a way of learning about the industry and combining the areas of design that interest me.
Marcus went through a lot of his illustrations, which mainly consist of animals, famous characters from the 1970's, music, abstract shapes and magical creatures. Saying the reasons for creating these images were because they fascinated him and were what he liked.
I found this talk really inspiring and felt eager to work after leaving the talk, which is partly due to Marcus' personality and his exciting, exploratory artwork.

I have been busy experimenting with pattern making, finding new ways to illustrate hypnagogic states. I have been using ink and water on paper to create 'psychedelic' like patterns to use in my collages.

I mentioned earlier about making an optical device that could create geometric patterns and shapes in a bid to develop my technique, so I made a very simple kaleidoscope out of card, mirrored card and tape. The process was so simple, but the effects to be had are really visually exciting and would work great with projection and lighting.

Here are a few test shots, I especially like the layering effect and how the image challenges the eye to recognize the 'real' image from the reflected image.

I have been thinking of other ways to put my illustrations out there, besides the standard print on paper (however this will always be the final result), which also use people and the environment. I came across the idea of projecting my illustrations onto people after looking at photographer Corriette Schoenaerts. Not only does this technique look visually exciting but it would be a great way of creating that 'layered' look I have been aiming to construct.
By projecting my imagery onto people and photographing it, I aim to represent the conscious mind - being the actual person, the subconscious mind - being the illustration, and the states of mind inbetween - being created by the mood and effects of the projection. This will also show how the minds 'overlap' and the 'underlying layers'.

CHANCE

To show the act of randomness I have been researching into surrealist techniques, such as 'cut-up' and 'chance', where text and imagery are cut up and placed by chance.
Here I have cut up a piece of paper randomly into shapes then dropped them onto my sketchbook, these can then be stuck down. I have been exploring ways in which to create automatic and subconscious images without using reference or thinking about what I am creating. Using this technique also represents lack of control, which signifies the lack of control we have with our mind and automatic thought/actions.

Further elements I would like to represent in my illustration, that I have picked out of my in-depth research include -
Fears & phobias, hidden & concealed desires - instead of showing what these are, I can show that they are hidden and concealed.
Randomness - narrative interrupted, how the mind skips from one thought to another.
Memories - represented through old photos from childhood. Freud and Jung believe dreams are a collection of forgotten thoughts and memories.
Echoes/reappearance - With the use of repetition I can represent how the mind re-encounters things you've seen.
Layering - To represent the 'underlying layer' known as the subconscious mind.

On Friday the illustration lot took a trip to London for a serving of culture and inspiration. I went to a few galleries including Tate Britain, Saatchi and an illustration exhibition at The Rag Factory just off Brick Lane.
I especially liked the huge prints and sculptures found in the Saatchi gallery, there always seems to be something exciting, fresh and humorous there.

Genetics not Generics.

I came up with the term Genetics not Generics as a catchy slogan to accompany my illustrations, it pulls in my use of genetic forms to prevent people from being the same.
I have also been working on a few screen prints that show the form of the body internally and externally. Using the brain as a pattern reference. All patterns and textures found in these illustrations have been taken from biological books, and are of internal body parts, cells, organs etc. They put the inside of the body on the outside.

1.So Emily when did you realise art was your thing, has illustration always been at the forefront?
Art has always been my thing even if I’ve tried to avoid it. I’ve been brought up in a very creative family, my parents own an art shop and when I think about it the majority of my family are in the art and design industry.
I’ve only been really focusing on illustration since I started uni, but I am still just as into my graphic design. The degree I am doing at the moment, Visual Communication is a mixture of graphic design and illustration so I am being educated in both worlds and I’m not limiting myself in what I can and will be doing.

2.Are you using any editing software, or is it all hand based?
Although the images I create have the hand rendered look I totally rely on Photoshop! I am very hands on so I start with hand based techniques which I basically build up and then edit on Photoshop. My original images are very different to my final ones.
I tend to use printing, pen and collage techniques, but I like finished results fast, so the Mac is the best way for that.

3.Have you done any commisioned work?
Nope, anyone?

4.Whats the plan for Emily Hadden after university?
Where do I start…
Promote the shit out of myself for a start.
Set up my own studio so I can just spend everyday being creative, do all those projects I haven’t had time to do, hopefully collaborate with some other illustrators/designers and I guess I’ll be freelancing it on the funds side of things, then who knows where all of this will take me..

5.What illustrators are you feeling at them moment, and also artists in the Graphic Design field?
Experimental Jetset are huge, although very graphical I can’t get enough of the work they do. Illustrators Bryony Lloyd, Melvin Galapon, Jim O’Raw and Damien Correll are who I’ve recently come across, I like their stuff because it stands out from the recent ‘hand drawn’ craze.
I come across new illustrators and designers everyday so the list would be never ending.

6.Describe your work, is there always a theme or style present? Or is it
always different with each piece?
I guess I have a natural style which just kind of happens in each image I create.
I like things which are odd, that aren’t quite right and my work tends to show that.
I try to add another dimension and not just create a pretty picture. Although my work appears nice at first you need to look into it, I still don’t know if my tutor realised that I put penises on the head of The Statue of Liberty in one of my illustrations.

7.So Emily, I know you recently started emilyhadden.com, have you had any feedback or interest since you launched it?
I’ve had a lot of positive feedback from people; it’s always great to hear nice stuff said about your work. I never thought the phrase ‘I Am Emily Hadden’ would have caught on so much. It’s quite an intimidating thing though, putting yourself on the web, suddenly everyone knows what you do and is taking an interest in it.

8.Right Emily, I know your not always as hard working as you may lead people to believe haha so where do you go out when hitting it up hard? Any good night recently?
Anywhere with some nice gritty music. Drum n Bass, Dubstep, Electro, Breaks and I will be there.
Ram @ Matter was crazy, and there’s a good monthly night called Dubnium in Bournemouth if you like your Dubstep and Roots. 2020 is probably the best place in Bmouth for DJ’s, The Nextmen, Stanton Warriors and Plump DJs played recently to name a few.

9.When not drawing or raving, what are you doing?
Shopping, customising clothes, chillaxing, looking for inspiration, discovering new places, spending times with the people I adore.

10.Favourite sandwich?
Ploughman’s with all the extras.

I had a lot of fun doing screenprinting for most of the day today. I experimented with my simple pattern designs with colour and layering, I thought that some of the prints were quite successful and would definitely like to do some more detailed prints for my FMP.

London Trip

So we had a very long day in London yesterday, which I was really looking forward to, however most of the exhibitions we went to visit were closed and the galleries didn't have much to offer. This is probably something to do with my lack of ideas, which I really need to sort out.
We visited the Tate Britain, Covent Garden, Shoreditch, and Brick Lane, If you are about in Covent Garden on a Monday they have a fantastic Letterpress/printing stall, Nick and I tested out our buys today...

I really wish I could have spent longer just wandering around, that's where most of my inspiration come from.
